Organic Foods or Natural Foods?
Under new rules from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, consumers choosing Organic Products will know that the food has been produced without pesticides, hormones, antibiotics, irradiation or bio-engineering. Further, Organic farmers will be required to conserve soil and water to enhance environmental quality and treat animals humanely. These standards will apply to both U.S.-grown food, as well as imported food.
Natural foods and beverages will not contain anything artificial or synthetic, and a food or food ingredient is not more than minimally processed. The Natural Meats on the market today, do not contain Hormones or other added flavors or enhancers.
Depending on where you live, Organic Foods may be abundant! Some may be expensive others may not. Personally, I have noticed more stores accommodating the Natural or Organic Buyer.
But when you are feeding dogs, how much expense do we bear? Organics can be very expensive. So at the very least, use your judgment on what looks like a healthy food. First, READ the LABEL. I will not buy anything that has BHA or BHT, Polysorbates, excessive dyes, especially red and blue. Next, I look for ingredients I cannot figure out, cannot say out loud or have never heard of. Really, if it doesn't sound like food, what is it?
It may seem redundant, but I read every label! Even if I still buy the item because my cravings win, at least I know what ingredients I am putting on the table. Most of the time I treat my dogs like my kids, if I won't eat it, why would I feed it to my dogs? And if I wouldn't feed it to my dogs, I certainly won't eat it.
